My name is Mischa Martin, and I am a teacher.

This is more surprising than you may think.

The two things I never wanted to be when I grew up were a nun or a teacher.

Every September I would be so excited to start another school year. I loved to learn. But I was always disappointed. Most of the time I was bored out of my skull because the work was far below my capabilities. But the reverse was also true. Arithmetic and mathematics baffled me and made me miserable. In retrospect, I should have been in accelerated classes for most things, and in a special math class for kids who really struggled.  It’s hard to accommodate individuals in our school systems, designed as they are, on the factory model.

Factories are fine for making widgets, but people are not widgets.

I fell into teaching by accident, a lucky accident for me.  By the end of the first year, I knew I had found where I belonged. I just kept on teaching for over 20 years.

As much as I loved classroom teaching, there is something magic about working one-on-one with students, whether they are children or adults.

I am passionate about teaching and learning.
